Plan your experienceA capital from the 11th–13th centuries
The city rose as Sri Lanka's second great capital and reached its height under rulers including Parakramabahu I.
Its character comes from striking relationships: monumental brick beside carved stone, sacred places within royal precincts, and water engineering woven through parks and fields. The circular Vatadage, lotus-stem pillars of Nissankalata Mandapa, Gal Vihara's rock-cut figures, and the reservoir known as the “Sea of Parakrama” give the city its unmistakable rhythm.
